Wouldn’t the be able to bring in the same tourism that the Dominican Republic do? Wouldn’t this help the poverty of the state? I’ve never heard of anyone going to Haiti for a caribbean vacation – but I hear about people going to Dominican Republic all the time.

Hello.
The island was once known as Hispaniola. African slaves revolted against French colonizers and thus gained their independence long before other enslaved African countries.
There seems to be lots of political unrest and there is a huge gap between haves and have-nots in Haiti. It is a very unfortunate and sad situation there, and I feel for the Haitian people, especially since they were the first of those in the African diaspora to gain freedom.
I have always been intrigued by the Americas (North, South, Central and the Carribean) so I have desired to travel to Haiti and even Cuba.
Royal Carribean has a destination resort on Haiti, which surprised me. A Haitian friend of mine says that the resort is relatively safe and it is separated from the residential parts of Haiti by mountains.
I still want to go to Haiti to see the resort but now with the earthquake situation there, I feel like any trip I take would be better served if it were to help the people there recover from the disaster rather than just hanging out on some remote resort beach like a rich American.
As far as I know people do visit Haiti for vacations, we NEED to realise that not all of Haiti is poor and desolate. A Four star hotel just crumbled as a result of the Earthquake in Haiti…that should tell you that since Haiti had a four star hotel(or a hotel period) some sort of vacationing was going on in the island!

Because Haiti has had an unstable government situation for many years and their government has not been able to focus on developing tourism, what with all the other problems their people face.
I’ve been to Haiti as a tourist and I stayed in a nice hotel. I saw a lot of European tourists. The beaches were nice, not as beautiful as those in Jamaica though. But then, Dominican Republic beaches are not as nice as beaches in Jamaica either. Americans are just not knowledgeable about Haiti. It’s quite mountainous and very pretty. The people are lovely, once you stop and get to know them. Of all the Caribbean islands, Haiti is probably the most African of all in terms of their art, music, and customs. It is very exotic in every way and once you visit, you fall in love. It is true that some Haitians still practice voodoo as a religion, and you will hear them up in the hills beating drums late at night. However, most people there are devout Roman Catholics. Haiti has had a lot of political problems over the years and up to just a few years ago, it was ruled by a dictator, Papa Doc Duvalier, later by his son, Baby Doc who didn’t really want to rule. He was run out of the country and went to live in France. For years, people were afraid to speak out against the government and they basically lived in fear of retribution. They feared the police and the military. The Ton Ton Macoute terrorized people and kept them in check. As a result, of all those problems, Haiti may have seemed closed off from the rest of the world but before this tragedy, it was a beautiful island.
Haiti does have beach resorts. They have not developed the potential due to decades of civil unrest. Even in good times, the safety factor is not great in Haiti. There have always been street gangs, and government opposition groups causing instability.
They are know for other things including their relifion and their proverty. It is not given a good light.
a lot of people go to Haiti for vacation. There are nice hotels and nice beaches there, it’s just that Dominican Republic has much more touristic atractions so you’re more likely to hear about Dom.Rep.
The political situation there has made Haiti a place many people did not want to risk visiting. There used to be a Club Med there, but it has been closed for years.
